Cucumbers in the Woods

The Copperhead Snake is a difficult one to see in many conditions.  They do not have a rattle and often provide no warning of their presence.  Multiple times I realized a Copperhead was near by due to a very distinct cucumber smell.

There is a Copperhead Snake in both of the images below.

Silent but Deadly

These mushrooms look like some you might find in the grocery store.  Not so fast, these are one of the deadliest wild mushrooms existing.  Known as the Death Caps.  If you are considering mushroom hunting, the attached video could save a life.

Does Size Really Matter

So who do you think is tougher?

The following video is a TNT video from November 2016.   Sometimes it is really amazing on who has the upper hand.  The will to stay alive can go along way when it comes to survival.

Monkey Business

Sometimes which lens we look through, determines whether we are enemies or friends.  These three appear to be friends, at least for the time being.

Disgusting Neighbors

Some of us really do need to learn how to clean up after ourselves.  The attached article in on camping etiquette.  Some "golden rule" education needed!  Our fellow campers or nature, do not deserve our trash.

Mergansers on the Move

Spring is in the air.  Over the last two days, we spotted both the Common Merganser (above) and the Hooded Merganser (below), in our cove on Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg. Unfortunately, they are only here for a few days as they head further north.

Tool Using Crows

When looking at us, crows always have this mysterious look.  Who does not remember one of the original horror films "Birds".  Did we learn from crows or them from us? Either way, amazing!

How Far Back Do We Go?

We find this art fascinating dating back at least 40,000 years ago. What will we find next about human life on earth and in our universe?

9000 Mile Flight, Ends with Lunch

We often do not get too excited by gulls.  This one is a Ross Gull that flew over 9000 miles, from Siberia, and ended up in Pillar Point Harbor, California.  This was the second gull of this breed to ever be spotted in California.  Unfortunately for the gull, a little while later, two Peregrine Falcons had it for lunch.  The wonders of nature!

Photo's copied from the San Francisco Chronicle, January 22nd, 2017.

Pets or Wild Animals

More and more wild animals are being kept as pets.  Our thoughts are "wild is wild, domestic is domestic".  Is there a scenario of domesticating wild?  Maybe, but this should be done by professionals.

What are your thoughts?

Tenting in the Air

Cool Places is a new website from the creators of Rough Guides and Cool Camping,
suggesting the best places to stay, eat, drink and shop in Britain (coolplaces.co.uk)

We really thought this was worth sharing.  The tent has a super comfy round bed and a wood burning stove.  Certainly would be safer to be tenting in the air than on the ground.

Great Places to Visit in 2017

We really enjoyed visiting the Petrified Forrest National Park in April of 2016.   This is a special effects photo we took while visiting the park.

WASHINGTON — Visitors will be able to enter any of America’s national parks for free on 10 days in 2017 selected by the National Park Service.
Here are the fee-free days for 2017:
  • Jan. 16 — Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Feb. 20 — Presidents Day
  • April 15 and 16 plus April 22 and 23 — National Park Week Weekends
  • Aug. 25 — National Park Service Birthday
  • Sept. 30 — National Public Lands Day
  • Nov. 11 and 12 — Veterans Day Weekend
“National parks, known for their priceless beauty, are a bargain anytime, but on these 10 days in 2017, they really will be priceless,” said National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis.  “We want everyone to visit their national parks, and fee-free days provide an extra incentive to experience these amazing places.”
On these days, all NPS sites will waive entrance fees for all visitors. The waiver does not cover amenity or user fees for things such as camping, boat launches, transportation, or special tours.
